MAP MODEL

Janet was the NCC's Project/Design manager for the development of a pedestrian orientation system for Confederation Boulevard, the Capital's ceremonial route.

The primary component of the system was a series of seven map models. Each map model is made up of a 48" diameter three dimensional bronze map of Confederation Boulevard and its attractions mounted on a custom concrete base with information and legend panels. Janet worked with in-house team of landscape architects, engineers, interpretation specialists, and information officers to ensure that the solution not only met the public's needs to orient themselves to the City's core and its attractions, but fit beautifully within this prestiguous streetscape's for many years to come.

Her close supervison of the many fabrication contracts required to produce these map models (sculpture, mold making, casting, graphics, concrete molds, concrete casting, hpl panels, and installation) resulted in a high quality product that fit together seamlessly. These map models have proven to be very successful both at drawing visitors to them and helping them find thier way.

CONFEDERATION BOULEVARD INPERPRETATION

Janet was the NCC's Project/Design manager for the development of a series of 25 interpretation panels located around the Capital's cermeonial route, Confederation Boulevard. These beautiful panels with bronze frames, sculpted details and cast artifacts communicate the significance of the many spectacular views and institurions located along the route. This very complicated project required much liaison with partner institutions, municipalities, historical experts, and the NCC's multi disciplinary project team in order to guide the design, sculpture, and fabrication technologies through to the successful completion. This project has won an award from Interpretation Canada.

JACQUE CARTIER PARK

As NCC's Project/Design manager, Janet managed this project throuhg its entirety from the development of the theme, content, and messages through the design, prototyping, supervison of the sculpture, mold making, casting, fabrication, installation and commissioning. Janet's task was to develop a series of interpretation nodes located along the pathway which follows the Ottawa River, communicating the importance of the Ottawa River (and all Rivers) in the opening up and development of Canada. The design is enduring, resistant to weather and vandalism. It also fits the the range of environments, relate to the river, intrigue and draw the attention of the demographic using the pathway. Janet met all these goals while adding her own artistic flare through the aesthetic and sculptural aspects of the project.

LAC LEAMY

As NCC's Design manager, Janet worked with the Interpretation Projet Manager by managing the design, fabrication and installation of this playful approach to providing information on the history and ecology of this family oriented Park. Each interpretation panel is shaped to support the underlying message and is mounted on a stamped concrete map of the area. The language of the structures was based on the nearby pavillion, and all was made of robust materials to withstand the weather and vandalism.

LEBRETON

While working at the NCC, Janet had the unique opportunity to not only design this plaque and see it through fabrication and installation, but she also personally provided the sculpture and mold for this plaque. This plaque was developed for the unveiling of the NCC's festival plaza next to the National War Museum. The plaque was developed to accomodate the name of the plaza at a later date, once a name had been determined.

WAR MEMORIAL

Janet was the design manager for the NCC, working in collaboration with NCC interpretation and landscape design experts, DND, Veterans Affairs, and the Royal Canadian Legion in the development of these two sets of bronze bas-relief panels mounted on low concrete bases flanking the National War Memorial. These subtle panels allow the monument to remain centre stage while providing supporting information on the sacrifices made during the Wars. Janet was responsible for managing and coordinating the multiple contracts for design, sculpture, mold making, fabrication and project installation.

TULIP PLAQUE

While working at the NCC, Janet had the opportunity to design an update to a historic plaque commemorating Queen Julianna's gift of tulips to Ottawa each year. Janet sculpted a pair of bronze tulips to not only add her artisitc flare to the plaque but to help tie the four plaques together.

SOUTH KOREAN WAR MONUMENT

While working at the NCC, Janet worked in the multi-disciplinary team to integrate the South Korean Monument into it's site and provide interpretation on the Monument message. She took this opportunity to sculpt the decorative flowers and leaves for the plaque to reinforce the tie in with the mounument which has these decorative elements.

SAUGUS INTERPRETATION MODEL

Worldview Studio worked collaboratively with a team of industrial designers, landscape designers and US Park Services staff members in the development of this universally accessible scaled replication of the Saugus Iron Works site, as it would have appeared in the 17th century.

Mitchell worked closely with the team in order to develop creative ways of showcasing the site in context with its surroundings, ensuring that the model would be legible and touchable. He also included an interactive feature that enables staff to pour water onto the map.  The water then flows through the site, demonstrating the importance of the site’s topogaphy and the water source to the functioning of the site.

Mitchell provided the sculpture as well as the mold-making, foundry supervision and installation services for this orientation map model.

Art is a pure expression of self, the canvas of ones own soul. It is a true portrait of how one views ones self in relation to the world around it. Art is the "WORLDVIEW" the "ALL THAT IS" of the individual.
